Replacing Your Spark Plug Wires

*EASY*

You should replace all spark plug wires, and ignition coil wire, every 4-5 years, regardless of exterior visual condition, according to the following procedure:

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground with the engine OFF, the parking brake engaged, and the transmission in PARK (for automatic) or REVERSE (for manual). If the engine has been run recently, let it cool. Raise the hood.
  2. Organize your new spark plug wires according to length. It will be necessary to match them to the used wires being replaced. Make sure the new spark plug wires are approved by your vehicle manufacturer.
  3. Remove one spark plug wire by disconnecting both ends from the spark plug and distributor cap. Find the same length replacement wire and install the new wire in place of the old. However, first coat the inside of the boot and connector with a small amount of dielectric compound to prevent voltage leaks. Be certain the boot of the spark plug wire is snapped firmly into place over the spark plug terminal.
  4. Repeat the above step for all spark plug wires.
  5. Replace the coil wire connecting the ignition coil and distributor cap.
  6. Start the engine to confirm all spark plug wire connections are complete. If the idle is rough, check your connections. Close the hood.
